Maths lessons at Illogan School follow the school’s ethos of ABCD- Aspire, Believe, Create and Dazzle and we strive for every child to fulfil their potential.

Our aims

  • To enable pupils to be fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems, helping children to develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • To support children to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalising, developing an argument, providing justifications and giving proof using mathematical language.
  • To encourage children to become problem solvers by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems, enabling them to break down problems into a series of smaller steps and which develop their skills of resilience and perseverance.

We aim to do this through consistently good teaching which incorporates the most up to date ideas and methods, rich questioning and lively discussion. Our teaching is supported by the use of the White Rose mastery scheme of learning.
