Here, at Illogan Primary School we value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning. Our personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) curriculum brings together healthy relationships, social responsibility and personal well-being, whilst promoting fundamental British values. Although PSHE is taught through discreet lessons, it is also integrated into all activities, assemblies, educational visits and extra-curricular clubs. There are frequent opportunities provided in school which encompass PSHE education, including (but not limited to) sports tournaments, celebration assemblies and our Pupil Parliament.

Our aims for PSHE are:

  • to promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at Illogan School
  • to prepare pupils at Illogan School for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

How do we teach PSHE at Illogan?

We follow the Jigsaw scheme of work, Topics included in the programme of study are arranged into ‘puzzles’ which are: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. 

Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education*. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six Puzzles (units) and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year.

At Illogan Primary School we allocate 45 minutes to PSHE each week in order to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way. These explicit lessons are reinforced and enhanced in many ways.  We aim to ‘live’ what is learnt and apply it to everyday situations in the school community.

*At Illogan School, puberty is taught as a statutory requirement of Health Education and covered by our Jigsaw PSHE Programme in the ‘Changing Me’ Puzzle (unit), and we conclude from the DFE Guidance that sex education refers to Human Reproduction. In order to teach this in a scientific context, and knowing that National Curriculum Science requires children to know how mammals reproduce, we have opted to teach this within our Science curriculum, not within PSHE or Relationships and Sex Education as we believe this is most appropriate for our children.  These topics are commented on during the ‘Changing Me’ unit in the Jigsaw Scheme but do not go beyond that taught within the Science Curriculum – parents will be informed prior to the start of this PSHE unit.

Inclusion

We recognise that in all classes, children have a wide range of ability, and so we seek to provide suitable learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task to the ability of the child. We achieve this in a variety of ways:

  • setting tasks which are open-ended and can have a variety of responses;
  • setting tasks of increasing difficulty;
  • grouping children by ability and setting different tasks for each group;
  • grouping children in mixed ability groups;
  • providing resources of different complexity, depending on the ability of the child;
  • using classroom assistants to support the work of individuals or groups of children.
