Welcome to the Y2 class page!
Please read below to find out about what we have been learning. There are also some useful links for some learning games that you could play with your child at home.
Habitats Project- Spring Term
Through this project, Y2 have been learning how different habitats and microhabitats support plants and animals to live. Y2 have identified and classified things that are living, dead or that have never even been alive! They have explored microhabitats found on the school grounds and also researched habitats found all over the world! The children will go on to create collages of their habitats in art. They will use a range of materials to represent the different textures found within that habitat.
Materials Project- Autumn Term
We have been investigating different objects in our local environment. We have identified what the objects are made from and then investigated the properties of the material in order to understand why that material was chosen. We have also been exploring materials that stretch, bend and twist. As part of this project, the children have also made dragons out of egg boxes. They designed and then chose suitable materials to make their dragons.
Holt and Cold Project- Autumn Term
During this project we will be investigating the weather patterns that we experience in the UK as well as comparing our weather to the climate in other countries around the world.
Healthy Living Project- Autumn Term
We have been investigating ways in which we can keep our bodies healthy in science.
We have been investigating good hygiene habits this week. The children made plasticine teeth and we have been finding out when and how to brush our teeth in order to keep them healthy.
Chartewlls came into school and delivered a healthy eating workshop this week! The children designed and then made healthy snack bars.
This term we will be investigating addition and subtraction. We will be learning number bonds up to 20 and exploring the relationship between these numbers (e.g. 13 + 5 = 18 so 5 + 13 = 18 and 18 – 5 = 13). We will also be learning to add and subtract ones and tens as well as adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers. Finally, we will be learning number bonds that make 100.
During Autumn 1, we have been learning about number and place value. We have been learning about tens and ones and using this to help compare and order numbers. We have also been reviewing how to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and have been learning how to count in 3’s.
Spring Term– This term we have been learning The Mousehole Cat story. Y2 will then use this story to help them write their own ‘defeating the monster’ stories. Y2 have also been focusing on using exclamation marks and commas withing their writing. After writing their stories, Y2 will go on to write instructions for how to tame a storm cat.
Autumn Term– This term in literacy, we will be exploring the book ‘The Emperor’s Egg’ by Martin Jenkins. We will learn about non-fiction texts and have a go at writing our own fact file about penguins. We will be focusing on writing in the present tense as well as using expanded noun phrases and writing captions.
During Autumn 1, we have been investigating the story Beegu. We have been reviewing when to use capital letters and full stops in sentences as well as learning when to use question marks. We have also been learning about verbs and how we can use them to write in the past tense.
We learn a new seplling rule every week. The chldren learn to write words using the spelling rule and then have the opportunity to practise using the spelling rule on the Spelling Shed game.

Please bring in P.E kit and outdoor learning clothes (waterproof trousers, coat and wellies) so that your child can take part in both sessions.
We send home homework grids full of exciting activities for your child to complete with you every few weeks. The homework grid will be linked to our current project that we are learning about.
